PROFILES IN MENTORING
Kalena Ranoa
Occupation: Actress/Writer/SuperShero
Years with YSF: 4 fun years!
Most recent school: Melrose Elementary
Favorite Movie: "Pretty Woman"
Favorite Book (or book recommendation): "The Secret Life of Bees." It was beautifully written.
Name of your favorite teacher growing up: Mrs. Ferrant, my 5th grade teacher who introduced me to Anne of Green Gables & encouraged me to recite Jabberwocky to the class.
Why do you mentor?: It enriches our community and I’m inspired by our brilliant young writers. Oh yes, and it saves me from my Hollywood vanity!
What was the last script you mentored? What was it about?: "The Roman’s Soldiers." Alexander defeats aliens with a hot dog bazooka to save Rome. It ends victoriously with a pizza party!
Is there a moment that stands out to you in your experience as a mentor?: Many, but getting hugs from my sweet students is the best.
What would you tell others about YSF?: It’s a magical experience; DO IT!
How does YSF affect you, and how do you think it affects other mentors?: After most sessions and especially after The Big Show I get warm fuzzies in my belly and wonderful endorphins are released. I’m positive that it affects the other mentors the same way.
Mentoring advice or trick of the trade: Just showing up and being present for the kids means the world to them. Time warp your mind to 4th grade & have a blast!
