Young Storytellers works with students in elementary, middle, and high school. In elementary school, students write scripts that are completely their own; in middle school, students write stories about challenges that they face; and in high school, students explore how various communities are portrayed in the media and craft stories that they feel represent their self-identified communities. Students in each program work with volunteer mentors, and every student gets to see their work performed by professional actors. Young Storytellers programs are designed around Common Core standards, integrate Social and Emotional Learning activities, and include components of Learning for Justice’s Social Justice Standards.

WHAT IS THIS POSITION?

The Operations Specialist is a member of the Operations Team and supports internal and external systems and procedures that make Young Storytellers run smoothly. They support equitable onboarding processes for interns and staff. They are also responsible for ensuring that the Young Storytellers office and digital spaces are fully functional and in the best shape possible for our hard-working staff, interns, and volunteers. The Operations Specialist has a unique opportunity to integrate the YS values of belonging, exploration, connection, play, antiracism, and equity in all parts of the organization, including the operational side of things that not everyone sees on a daily basis. The Operations Specialist reports to the Managing Director.

Cool, But Let’s Get Specific. What’s Involved in This Job?

Responsibilities:

• Supports recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding of YS staff members, interns, and consultants;

• Works closely with the Managing Director and YS Directors to develop and implement equitable team norms, procedures, and practices;

• Supports financial systems, including staff and volunteer reimbursement, reconciliation, and billing alongside the YS Financial Accountant;

• Supports the planning and implementation of staff meetings, events, and training opportunities with relevant team members, including prepping materials and spaces, ordering food, and creating promotional materials;

• Monitors the YS office, ensuring that it is fully stocked, clean, and well taken care of, and supportive of team collaboration and teamwork, including monitoring voicemails and emails, checking the mail, and managing the chore chart;

• Manages inventory of program and office supplies, including paper, snacks, cleaning supplies, thank-you gifts, and other supplies;

• Implements YS’s Diveristy Equity Inclusion & Belonging  and antiracism (DEIBAR) practices in all parts of organizational operations

What Are The Skills & Experiences Needed For This Position?

Required Qualifications:

• Proficient in project management;

• Excellent organization skills;

• Adaptable and effective communication skills, both written and verbal;

• Experience and comfort working with databases, Slack, Asana, and Google Suite;

• Creating form surveys, monitoring stock inventories, and using digital tools to create better system processes 

• A desire for equity and accessibility in all parts of organizational operations and culture.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience assisting executives; 

• Facilitation skills and comfort facilitating in front of diverse groups of people;

• Experience with graphic design;

• Experience with social media management;

• Previous experience managing hiring processes preferred;

• Previous experience managing finances preferred;

• Experience working in non-profit or social services.

What is My Compensation for This Position?

The Temp Operations Personnel is a part time, hourly position starting October 1, 2024 through March 2025. Total compensation includes $25 per hour, which will be paid bi-weekly  in accordance with our normal payroll procedures. 

Some other important elements of this offer:

• You will receive five days of PTO each calendar year; 

• You will be reimbursed for mileage and any parking expenses accrued in the course of executing your work monthly 

• The Young Storytellers team operates on a hybrid work schedule with two days at our DTLA office and three days remote each week.

WHAT IS THIS POSITION?

The Program Support Intern works closely with Programs Team members to support elementary, middle, and high school programs across Young Storytellers sites in Los Angeles. The Program Support Intern supports the collection and input of student, teacher, and family paperwork, and helps to communicate essential information to students and their families or guardians, ensuring that they have everything that they need to be active and engaged participants in our program. The Program Support Intern’s work allows Young Storytellers to reach hundreds of students each semester, and for those students to express their unique voices in a brave space during a time when it is needed most. All YS Interns are encouraged to explore and integrate the YS values of belonging, connection, exploration, play, antiracism, and equity into their projects and daily tasks.

Responsibilities:

• Tracks and inputs student, school, and family paperwork and surveys using SOGO and features of Google Workspace such as Drive, Docs, and Sheets;

• Works with the YS Programs and Volunteer Teams to support program logistics, including student writing sessions and Big Show performances;

• Supports communications and building community with students, families, and schools, as helpful and in tandem with the Programs Team members;

• Inputs data and communication notes into Young Storytellers database;

• Assists with identification of and outreach to new communities for YS programming, in line with YS equity goals;

• Manages task lists and priorities using Asana (program management software); 

• Supports the implementation of YS’s DEIB and antiracism practices in all parts of program operations, school community, and volunteer work.

• Written and verbal fluency in both English and Spanish strongly preferred;

• Strong verbal and written communication skills;

Young Storytellers LACAC Interns will begin in August or September 2024 and will work 400 hours before March 1, 2025 with an average of 16-20 hours per week. LACAC Interns will be paid $16.90/hour ($6,760 total) for the 400 hours worked. The Young Storytellers team operates on a hybrid work schedule with some days remote and some days in-office in DTLA; we ask that our interns join us in-office at least two times a week.

The Volunteer Support intern helps with tracking volunteer requirements, including background checks, vaccination records, and other required paperwork, ensuring that the volunteer experience is as smooth and efficient as possible. The Volunteer Support Intern also helps to prepare and lead volunteer trainings, including orientations, program trainings, and volunteer skill-building workshops. The Volunteer Support Intern ultimately helps Young Storytellers volunteers feel prepared and ready to engage with their young writers in each of our programs, allowing them to have an impact in the communities we serve. - Works with YS staff to track volunteer training status and maintain that information in the YS database;

- Supports YS staff in developing and delivering trainings and workshops based on YS curriculum for our volunteer community based on current program needs;

The Development & Database Intern works with Young Storytellers staff to execute a wide range of tasks, including database uploads, providing content and social media support, and inputting weekly student, donor, and volunteer information. The Development & Database Intern helps to build out the operations and development side of the organization by keeping all of the information in our custom database up-to-date for our team’s use and providing information so that we can tell the story of our volunteer, donor, and student engagement through data. Ongoing Responsibilities:

- Supports with the setup and maintenance of digital systems such as tracking spreadsheets

- Inputs various student, donor, and volunteer information into the Young Storytellers database;

- Ensures data is up-to-date and correct, using various sources to cross-reference and address inconsistencies;

- Supports organization and accuracy of data in Young Storytellers Drive;

- Supports fundraising communications and appeals;

- Supports development projects such as mailings, phone calls, and events;

- Supports the implementation of YS’s DEIB and antiracism practices in development and database projects.

Young Storytellers equips young people to be the driving force of their own narratives. We’re passionate about bringing people together and creating stories to raise the voices of those who don’t often get heard. We believe that when a young person understands the power of their own story—made of their unique background, culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, immigration status, geographic location, and economic status, among others—it creates a more empathetic and equitable future for everyone. We raise voices, one story at a time.

Young Storytellers works with students in elementary, middle, and high school. In elementary school, students write scripts that are completely their own; in middle school, students write monologues about challenges they face; and in high school, students write Public Service Announcements that address important issues in their self-identified communities. Students in each program work with volunteer mentors, and every student gets to see their work performed by professional actors. Young Storytellers programs are aligned with Common Core standards, CASEL’s Social Emotional Learning core competencies, and integrate components of Learning for Justice’s Social Justice Standards.

What Is This Position?

The Development Strategist will work closely with the President and Managing Director to help build relationships in the community and raise funds to further Young Storytellers’ mission. They will engage on a regular basis with individual donors, strategize and implement fundraiser events, manage the grant calendar in collaboration with our Grant Writer, and work with other team members to integrate a culture of giving into all aspects of Young Storytellers’ work.

At Young Storytellers, we follow Community Centric Fundraising principles, and believe that gifts of money (donations) and time (volunteer hours) are equally valuable. We treat and steward donors and volunteers in the same way.

Cool, But Let’s Get Specific. What’s Involved in This Job?

Ongoing Responsibilities:

• Build and maintain relationships with individuals, businesses, community organizations, foundations, and other stakeholders to create a strong network of supporters, particularly an individual giving program.

• Attend community events and represent the organization to increase awareness and engagement.

• Manage donor communications and stewardship of activities including acknowledgement letters, updates, and reports.

• Cultivate relationships with existing donors to foster long-term engagement and increased support.

• Support the President, Managing Director, and members of the Board of Directors in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding a network of individual and corporate donors.

• Plan, coordinate and execute fundraising events and recruit and coordinate event volunteers, vendors and sponsors, including the YS annual fundraiser, Biggest Show.

• Manage the grant calendar in partnership with the President and collaborate with the Grant Writer to complete grant applications and meet reporting deadlines.

• Collaborate with the President and Managing Director to identify strategic partnerships and sponsorships to support fundraising eorts.

• Oversee data management to maintain integrity of donor information.

• Implement YS’s DEIB and antiracism practices and Community Centric Fundraising

  principles in all parts of program implementation and operations.

Am I A Good Fit for This Position?

Required Qualifications:

• Proven experience in relationship building, community engagement, and donor relationships within the nonprofit sector.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate the organization’s mission and impact.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain genuine relationships with diverse stakeholders.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects.

• A desire to see YS programs, operations, and mission carried out in an equitable way.

• Personal connection to our mission and values. Individuals with lived experience aligned with students who participate in Young Storytellers programming are encouraged to apply.

• Experience working with CRM systems, donor management software, Google Slides, Canva, Adobe Suite, and/or other relevant tools.

• Experience working with diverse donor populations.

• Previous experience or knowledge of Community Centric Fundraising principles, and

  a desire and motivation to carry out fundraising strategy in an innovative way.

What is My Compensation for This Position?

The Development Strategist is a full-time, salaried position with a salary range beginning at $62,500 - $72,500, depending on experience and skills. Total compensation includes a health insurance stipend, retirement savings program, generous paid time off and holiday breaks.

Development Strategist (Full Time) - Begins April 15th-30th, 2024

Who Are We?

Young Storytellers equips young people to be the driving force of their own narratives. We’re passionate about bringing people together and creating stories to raise the voices of those who don’t often get heard. We believe that when a young person understands the power of their own story—made of their unique background, culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, immigration status, geographic location, and economic status, among others—it creates a more empathetic and equitable future for everyone. We raise voices, one story at a time.

Young Storytellers works with students in elementary, middle, and high school. In elementary school, students write scripts that are completely their own; in middle school, students write monologues about challenges they face; and in high school, students write Public Service Announcements that address important issues in their self-identified communities. Students in each program work with volunteer mentors, and every student gets to see their work performed by professional actors. Young Storytellers programs are aligned with Common Core standards, CASEL’s Social Emotional Learning core competencies, and integrate components of Learning for Justice’s Social Justice Standards.

What Is This Position?

The Development Strategist will work closely with the President and Managing Director to help build relationships in the community and raise funds to further Young Storytellers’ mission. They will engage on a regular basis with individual donors, strategize and implement fundraiser events, manage the grant calendar in collaboration with our Grant Writer, and work with other team members to integrate a culture of giving into all aspects of Young Storytellers’ work.

At Young Storytellers, we follow Community Centric Fundraising principles, and believe that gifts of money (donations) and time (volunteer hours) are equally valuable. We treat and steward donors and volunteers in the same way.

Cool, But Let’s Get Specific. What’s Involved in This Job?

Ongoing Responsibilities:

• Build and maintain relationships with individuals, businesses, community organizations, foundations, and other stakeholders to create a strong network of supporters, particularly an individual giving program.

• Attend community events and represent the organization to increase awareness and engagement.

• Manage donor communications and stewardship of activities including acknowledgement letters, updates, and reports.

• Cultivate relationships with existing donors to foster long-term engagement and increased support.

• Support the President, Managing Director, and members of the Board of Directors in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding a network of individual and corporate donors.

• Plan, coordinate and execute fundraising events and recruit and coordinate event volunteers, vendors and sponsors, including the YS annual fundraiser, Biggest Show.

• Manage the grant calendar in partnership with the President and collaborate with the Grant Writer to complete grant applications and meet reporting deadlines.

• Collaborate with the President and Managing Director to identify strategic partnerships and sponsorships to support fundraising eorts.

• Oversee data management to maintain integrity of donor information.

• Implement YS’s DEIB and antiracism practices and Community Centric Fundraising

  principles in all parts of program implementation and operations.

Am I A Good Fit for This Position?

Required Qualifications:

• Proven experience in relationship building, community engagement, and donor relationships within the nonprofit sector.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate the organization’s mission and impact.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain genuine relationships with diverse stakeholders.

• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects.

• A desire to see YS programs, operations, and mission carried out in an equitable way.

Desired Qualifications:

• Personal connection to our mission and values. Individuals with lived experience aligned with students who participate in Young Storytellers programming are encouraged to apply.

• Experience working with CRM systems, donor management software, Google Slides, Canva, Adobe Suite, and/or other relevant tools.

• Project and/or Program Management experience.

• Experience working with diverse donor populations.

• Previous experience or knowledge of Community Centric Fundraising principles, and

  a desire and motivation to carry out fundraising strategy in an innovative way.

What is My Compensation for This Position?

The Development Strategist is a full-time, salaried position with a salary range beginning at $62,500 - $72,500, depending on experience and skills. Total compensation includes a health insurance stipend, retirement savings program, generous paid time off and holiday breaks.
