Accessibility information for prospective South Los Angeles Mentors

Does this sound like you?

  • “I want to volunteer in South LA, but the commute is too far for me!”

  • “I want to volunteer in my community, but I need to work!”

Do not worry, we are working to make volunteering accessible for you, we need Volunteers in South Los Angeles!

This spring, we are proud to announce the launch of two new school partnerships that provide us the opportunity to expand deeper into South Los Angeles, a community that has been historically marginalized and under-invested in. As we introduce our program into new South Los Angeles communities, we are hopeful that members of those very communities will be excited to contribute to our impact by volunteering as mentors this semester.

South LA Mentors are Eligible for Stipends and Reimbursements.

At Young Storytellers, equity is one of our core values. We understand that volunteering can require a person’s time or resources, which can make it hard to prioritize. To help reduce the potential individual cost of volunteering, Young Storytellers will offer small stipends and mileage reimbursements to eligible South Los Angeles mentors.

Okay, I’m interested. What are the details?

  • Young Storytellers will offer a $150 stipend to all 24th Street & 95th Street Elementary School mentors who reside in South Los Angeles and South East Los Angeles.

  • Mentors at 24th Street & 95th Street Elementary School who do not reside in South Los Angeles and are commuting over 8 miles to the school site will be eligible for mileage reimbursement. Mentors taking public transportation may also be eligible for reimbursement!

  • Stipends and mileage reimbursements will be provided upon the completion of the 9-week program.

  • Proof of Residency Required, such as a valid Driver’s License, ID, or a current utility bill showing your name and address.

  • Mentors who are eligible for this support may either accept the funds or donate the funds back to Young Storytellers if they choose to do so.

We recognize these financial support options are modest, but we hope that it makes it easier for volunteers to give back to the community. As we continue to expand the reach of our programs into new communities, we will strive to make our programs more accessible for all!

Next Steps:
