We’ve done a lot of work this year to integrate anti-racism and equity in all that we do, including how we raise and use funds. We recognize that though we’re a nonprofit organization, an entity not usually associated with power - we do have access to resources. We also know that the services we provide address only a part of our students' needs.
That’s why we’re so excited to announce that we are committing to giving financial gifts to local organizations each year, particularly those that are BIPOC-led, BIPOC-serving, and those that provide services that address the overall wellness of our students. This year, our staff and board voted to give $2,500 each to:
United American Indian Involvement (UAII): Their mission is to promote and support the physical, behavioral, and spiritual well-being of American Indian/Alaska Natives in the urban Los Angeles area by providing comprehensive, integrated services that focus on all age groups and incorporate American Indian/Alaska Native cultures and traditions.
Dynasty's United Youth Association (DUYA): Located in South Los Angeles, DUYA’s mission is to ensure that all children and youth have access to quality programs that promote character and cultural competence. They continuously strive to enter the most vulnerable and neglected neighborhoods where the academic, emotional, health and social needs are not being met. They also hope to build a bridge of resources that helps students leverage their strengths and find a sense of purpose that brings meaning to their lives.
Proyecto Pastoral: Located in Boyle Heights, their mission is to empower the community of Boyle Heights through grassroots projects in education, leadership, and service. They walk side-by-side and in solidarity with Boyle Heights residents to build a healthy, safe, and thriving Boyle Heights community for all.
We encourage you to find out more about these organizations, and to support them with your time and/or donations! We’re so grateful to be doing work in our community alongside such inspiring leaders.
